Carretera de Cádiz is the western strip that runs down to the sea, and it holds Huelin, La Luz, Sacaba Beach and Torre del Río. Straight streets, blocks from the 1960s and 70s, ordinary neighbourhood shops, and a beach at the bottom of the hill.
Huelin is the single hottest gentrification story in Málaga: an ex-industrial working-class barrio that has become a young beachfront one, with its own beach and its own park. Rents and prices have risen sharply. If you are reading an older guide that still files Huelin under affordable, that guide is out of date. The district median is now 1,300€, the same as Centro; the square metre is cheaper, at 15.8€/m², only because the average flat is a little bigger at 82 m².
Two things to plan for. Just 14% of listings come from a private landlord, the lowest share of the six, so you will mostly be dealing with agencies and their paperwork. And the district is functional rather than pretty: you come here for the sea, the light and the price, not for old-town charm.
Transport: metro line 2 running through the district, frequent city buses, and a seafront walk into the centre.
